Mo-Kan for 3rd

Game 4: 28 March vs. L.S. North at Mo-Kan for 3rd Place (0-0, losing 4-5 in the shootout)

We really played well tonight. We dominated a game about as much as you can dominate a game in the second half, but, once again, we could not find the back of the net. That second half we got off 10 shots, 5 of them on goal to go with 8 second-half corners.

We created 10 corner kicks for the game. We are proud of the girls for working hard to create those what-should-be-dangerous deadballs. We probably should have finished at least one of them. We do need to rework our service from the left side.

One of the best things we did tonight was to move Marge back to her old spot at the top of the diamond.  She was amazing.  She touched the ball 3 times more than any other player on the field. She slotted 3-4 great through balls to our frontrunners as well.  2 College coaches, after the match, mentioned how well Marge played and how dangerous she is. She was not only the BWhite Player of the Match, she, along with Mallory Heying, was named to the All-Tournament team.

And what can you say about our defense?  We have played 4 games, against 4 quality opponents, and given up zero goals. Zero. Yes, at half we talked about closing space better, but we also knew that we just played 3 games in 5 days.  I know Mallory's legs probably were close to falling off as neither she nor Marge have had a break in the last two games. So, we applaud that defensive effort.

I know I statistically promised a goal if we could generate 8 corners, and the girls created 10, but we didn't cash one.  A little unlucky.

Kyli Jackson got rocked in the second half injuring her ankle, with quite a bit of time left in the match. The good news right now is that the X-Rays show no break.  So we will hope that ice and rest will have her back for BV Southwest.

After she left, we did not have a sub for center midfield.  Amanda and Francis held strong for the rest of the match, both playing well.

In fact, 2nd half Hamm generated 3 corners. That stat shows quite an effort by Amanda to get forward and to help generate some offense. Well done.

Another shootout—and we were much better. We made 2 out of 5 against Teresa’s. We hit our first 4 last night, but LS North was unreal. Yes, their first kicker hit the post; that did give us a chance, but the next 5 kicked unsavable balls.  We tried to offer up something different for the second five, but the ref would not let us change keepers; we have done it before, once using 3 keepers. The way North was shooting it probably wouldn't have rattled them anyway. But who knows? We still had Molly to use as well.

I know it is a little crazy that we have not given up a goal all season, yet stand 2-2.  I don't think I have ever seen that in all my years being associated with soccer.  We are going to start scoring, and when we knock down that door a bunch of goals are going to start flying in.

We got so many compliments on the tournament, especially on the hospitality room.  I know lots of people helped, but Mrs. McEnroe and Mrs. Janky headed it up.  Thank you guys so much.

And we really appreciated all of the help we got from JD in the press box: spotting, running the clock, collecting lineups, recording goals.  Great stuff. Greg and JD do a great job for all of our games, but for JD to show up and help with all the other games as well—that's just what makes other coaches and parents tells us what a smooth-running tourney it is!

We now stand 2-2-0.

Mo-Kan Semi-finals

Game 3: 26 March vs. Teresa's in the semifinals of the Bob Durig Mo-Kan (0-0; Shootout 2-3)

We picked up our 3rd straight shutout, but we also picked up our first loss. I know that really does not sound possible.

We battled to a 0-0 tie that immediately went to PK's. We only made 2, so Allyiah would have had to be perfect and psychic to have kept us in it. She was neither.

The BWhite Player of the Match was Marge Pigott who spent 70 minutes of the match marking Lily Farcus.  Marge basically took her out of the game.  Lily is quite a player, so that served as quite a feat, generating some commentary from Farcus a few times.

So escaping the first 3-5 minutes when we seemed intimidated or nervous or something, we played well enough to win.  We had 2-3 very good chances to score in the first half from run of play that we just did not finish.  Happens. Unfortunately, we did not have a couple of deadballs to pick us up the win.

We did not really create enough corners and our throw-ins were not dangerous tonight, but the two corners we had in the first half were served perfectly, allowing us two other great opportunities to score.

Second half we did not create much at all, and neither did they.  We could have opened things up by taking Marge off Lily, but we thought we could create a goal without the risk.  Wrong obviously.

But when we practiced our shootout, we didn't miss.  So, we didn't mind going into the shootout. We were not deadly, however, in the one tonight.

We now move on to play a very good Lee's Summit North team for 3rd place. It's no bargain as they played very well against Sion in the other semi, falling 2-0.

We now stand 2-1.

Hammon's Birthday

Game 2: 24 March, 3:00 in the first round of the Bob Durig Mo-Kan vs. Park Hill (3-0)

I did not do us any favors scheduling Park Hill in round 1.  They were very good.

It was 0-0 with 2 and change left in the first half when Grace O'Keefe (her first varsity goal) hit this amazing shot after a long throw-in from Mallory that would allow us to enter halftime up 1-0, despite being outplayed by Park Hill most of the first half.

And that halftime let us make a few adjustments.  And the girls answered the bell to play a very, very good second half.

BWhite named Co-BWhite Players of the Game in Alex Moss and Allyiah Calvert.  Moss teamed up for the 3rd time this young season with Maggie Ryan on a deadball for the biggest goal of the game—the one that took the score to 2-0.

Alex also put in a tremendous match at centerback, holding a dangerous attack group to zero. Now she had solid help from 5 other defenders and great keeper play, but she had a special game today.

And Allyiah had such an active first half where she saved 4 shots on goal, one that required a full-layout dive to her left. She kicked well against the tough wind as well.

The stat we all need to digest is the number of corners we created for the match. Coaches did not like the fact that we generated only 1 in the first half, but we didn’t create any in the second. Obviously we need to wall up better on the outside of the field. But we also need more overlaps, diagonal runs, give-in-goes, etc.

We did score off 3 more set pieces, but we are going to need a better attack of the baseline if we are going to keep scoring going forward.

We now move on to the semi-finals where we will take on the always-good St. Teresa's. We are a win away from getting back to the Mo-Kan finals and a probable match-up with #3 in the country, Notre Dame de Sion.

STATS:

First Half: Saints: Shots: 3 (2) Corners: 1 (Bryson)

2:44 O'Keefe (Long throw from Heying)

Second Half: Shots: 7 (4) Corners: 0

23:17 Ryan (Moss drops another long deadball into the box)

15:23 Janky (Mallory’s long throw results in a Pigott shot that deflects backward)

Opening Night

Game 1: vs. Blue Valley, 22 March (2-0)

Well, we opened against one of the best teams on paper in the entire area in Blue Valley. They are loaded, bringing back virtually everyone from a team that lost only in playoffs to state champs, BV West.

So, this match is a great result for us. And as Coach Hammons points out, early matches have a lot to do with deadballs and defense. We scored twice, but only off two set pieces, and we kept the sheet clean giving up only one shot on goal for the night.

BWhite IDed both Mallory Heying and Maggie Ryan as his BWhite Players of the Match.  Maggie just has a knack for getting a foot or a head on everything that comes her way, and she did that twice tonight.  First, Alex Moss lifted a long deadball from 40 that Maggie got a foot on to drive in, and then off a Higgerson corner, Maggie headed the ball to Alex's foot for our second goal. Big time.

Now, we could have scored a few more as Bryson just had a great rip that rang the top of the bar, and Grace struck another one that glanced off the back post, and those don't even count a couple of great setups for Janky that she just missed.

More impressive was the defensive pressure that we applied all of the field. To hold such a team, to virtually nothing dangerous reechoed Coach Hammon's mantra that "everyone plays defense." But the reason that defense works so well is its defensive center midfielder, Mallory Heying (BWhite's Devonte Graham).

Mo-Kan starts in just two days, and we open with Park Hill who just finished whacking Lee's Summit, 3-0.  We will have to be ready for a very good match again.

Nice opener.

Navy-Pink

Game .5: 17 March 2018 at STA vs. the JV. at 2:00 PM (10-0 with 8:00 to go)

Ok, we had our annual follow-up Blue-Gold (now Navy-Pink) with the basketball girls back.  It also never goes as well as it did this year.

Here are some extenuating circumstances: 1) every varsity player (except one on the school Rome trip) was back on time—never happens; parents, players thank-you. 2) we only go with one ref in the second game—we may have been offsides a couple of times (although we could have scored more) 3) JV got discouraged as any team would after awhile 4) we are so fast and determined to attack the baseline (are we happy about this—estactic!) a goalie must be aggressive off her line and 5) we only have 16 field players on varsity with a shorter rotation in which all are contributing (this seems like a positive team move).

Well, we can't really know how all of this preseason will translate to regular season right now, but we will find out Thursday night. We are all excited to see as the Blue-Gold venues have promised much.

Freshman, Grace O'Keefe, debuted today, and yes, she doffed the hat, but more importantly, she played with pace, set others up (4 assists) and looked as if she could play any of the 9, 10, 7, 11's. So.

We will need to play our front against our defense more this week to test it more.  The JV (and I promise this is going to be a very very good JV—wait until Thursday) put us in a couple of awkward defensive positions (or we helped put ourselves in them) that worried us some.

I could go up and down the lineup and compliment that effort yesterday, but hey, it was just blue-gold.  But Bella Bryson is just on a new level this year.  That second half kickoff where she bounded down the sideline, made a move, entered the box, t'eed it perfectly to an on-coming O'Keefe who rang up the top of the bar was jaw-dropping.  And 31 minutes later, dead, did it again only this time with the final O'Keefe ball going in to end the match.

And then there is Janky, and, and . . .

Bring on Thursday!

First Half:

1:15 in Janky (T-ball from O'Keefe)

8:30 in Janky (Through-ball O'Keefe)

24:00 in Chalabi (Pigott through)

29:00 O'Keefe (T-ball Janky)

30:30 Janky (off O'Keefe rebound)

34:00 O'Keefe (Ryan through)

35:00 Bryson (O'Keefe through)

Second Half:

54:00 Chalabi (Kat Miller through)

69:00 Hamm (Chalabi T-ball)

72:00 O'Keefe (Bryson T-ball)

Blue-Gold 1

Game 0: 8 March at STA for Blue-Gold (5-0)

This was an odd Blue-Gold in that we took the field with so many new starting varsity players. Blue-Golds don’t usually go too well with seasoned teams. I will say our returning starters were very good:  Mallory and Marge and Alex all played very well.

Bella and Olivia did so many nice things up top, generating loads of corners and other dangerous balls. (We saw flashes from Gabby as well.) The second goal where Marge saves the ball on the end line before dropping it to Mallory who hits a rocket ground pass that Olivia dummies into a Bryson goal was probably the play of the night.

Madison picked up 3 assists as she not only played at the top of the diamond but also some forward as well. Maggie Ryan showed flashes as well at her new position, the point. She just gets her foot or her head on so many balls.

Goza, Ramaekers and Trinity showed us a lot at centerback as well, and they are replacing a couple of program studs.

And what a great addition Avery is. We knew she would bring good technique with a strong defensive presence, but we saw the bonus of her taking those right-footed corners. We finished two of them. Kat Miller played both wings well, coming forward to ignite some offense as well. Speaking of good technique, we saw lots of it from freshman Skylee Deladurantaye. Skylee fits in nicely with that excellent midfield of Hamm, Pigott, and Heying.

We know that JV is going to have a very good season—we play against them every day in practice, and so far not nearly as well as we played tonight. They did generate a couple of very good chances. Muckerman was 1 v 1 with Calvert pretty early. We made a poor decision to drop another pass that almost created a goal against Mac.

James just made a great save off a Chalabi shot that was about to ring up side-netting. We have seen plenty of those plays at practice as well. Loftus’ distribution percentage has to be near 90% as it seems she always plays out to feet.

So, not sure exactly what this game means, as it is just Blue-Gold, but we were without O’Keefe, Hartnett, and Jackson as they are trying to win a State Basketball championship, and in the past, we haven’t had too many of these go this well. So, coaches are pleased.

STATS:

First Half:

Varsity:  Shots: 12 (7)  Corners: 6 (Chalabi 3, Ryan, Cox, Bryson)

JV: Shots: 2 (1) Corners: 0

Second Half:

Varsity: Shots: 15 (7) Corners: (5) (Chalabi 2, Cox, Heying, Ryan)
